After waving our parents goodbye, we went back inside and, being the responsible children we are, immediately started a good old fashion game of beer pong. All of my siblings and I have had some experience playing in college, so these games got very intense. After three or four games, we all decided to go to bed to get some rest for the next day’s adventure at the water park.
We all grew up in New Mexico where there’s almost no water anywhere, so a water
park is just as big of a deal to us as the ocean is. So we all got up and grabbed our bathing suits and went to Wet and Wild Hawaii. There were three or four water slides all in the same area, so we hit every single one. While we were there, we saw a new one opening up. This new one looked pretty intense. It was shaped like a U, and we had to walk up to the top of one of the sides, get in an inner tube, and slide down one of the sides. When you’re in the inner tube before they push you off, you can’t even see the side you slide down, so it almost looks like they are pushing you off a cliff. I am a bit ashamed to say, I may have screamed a little, but it was a blast! We hit every single slide at the park that day, but I think that one was my favorite.
The park was only open ’til about 3:30, so we went back to Bob’s house after the park closed and got some food. That night, Bob invited over some of his Navy buddies, and we all decided to play a drinking game called “Boom”. There are many different ways to play this game and it goes by many names, but if you want to learn how to play it, this link will take you to an explanation: https://hobbylark.com/party-games/How-to-play-Boom-Cup-Drinking-Game. Everyone but Bob’s friends knew how to play this game, so I’m pretty sure they woke up a bit more hungover than we did, due to all of the drinking required when someone messes up while playing.
Sometime last week, my whole family went and watched Jumanji, which is a hilarious movie, but while we were at the theater, we saw a sign for glow-in-the-dark putt-putt. Since we had nothing planned, we decided to go and check it out. It was only 9 holes, but the whole room it was in was lit with nothing but black lights, so everything was neon and glowing. I started off playing really well, but in the end, I was the big loser! I may be good at many things, but I guess glow-in-the-dark putt-putt is not one of them.
After putt-putt, we all went home and got ready to go out to Chinatown. We had heard the the first Friday of every month in Chinatown gets crazy. When we were all ready, we headed over to the house of one of Bob’s friends who lives close to Chinatown, and did a bit of pre-gaming there. I’m not sure if we ever actually made it to Chinatown, but I know we visited some pretty cool bars. I played some shuffleboard and talked to a bunch of fun people. By the end of the night, we ended up in a small bar, and we were the only ones left. So, with the bar to ourselves, we had some pretty funny conversations with the bartender.
At this point of the vacation, we had been going non-stop for a week and a half, so it was about time we all did some relaxation. I finished a whole book that day, John and Bob spent 15 hours playing video games, and Maggie slept most of the day. It was a much needed day of rest for all of us.
The next day was spent relaxing a little more, but we decided to go to a local bowling alley later in the day. The bowling gods were smiling down on me this day, because the alley we went to was really small, so there was not enough room for my brothers to bowl properly. So, despite being a bad bowler, I beat both of them! I may have lost big time at putt-putt, but I definitely made up for it at bowling. Unfortunately, Bob had to go back to work the next day, so we didn’t do too much that night.
Bob got up early and went off to work while John, Maggie, and I got to sleep in. Once we
all woke up, we decided that because it was our last full day in Hawaii, we needed to spend it on a beach. We looked up beaches nearby and got an Uber to Waikiki Beach. It was a really touristy beach, and there were big hotels all around it, but the water was really clear and it was a nice day. So we spread out our towels on the sand and spent the day relaxing at the beach. There was also a cool lagoon right next to the beach, so we spent some time there as well. The best part was the happy hour going on at one of the bars close to the beach, where we ended the day by getting some appetizers and drinks.
Bob got off work later on and picked us up, and we decided since it was our last night, we
should go out and get a nice dinner with just us siblings. So after a quick shower, we walked down to this nice little restaurant close to the house. We all got a drink (mine was called Black Point. I don’t know what was in it, but it was delicious). We got some clams as an appetizer, and I had an amazing Caesar salad. With our bellies all full, we walked back to Bob’s house. We decided to finally open the Christmas presents we got each other, but we put a twist on it. Our parents got us each a lock picking set for Christmas, and we decided to put our skills to the test by putting the locks on the presents, which we had to pick to be able to open the present. It was a fun little game and we all got some practice in picking the locks.
Bob once again had to get up early and go to work, so John, Maggie, and I woke up, did some cleaning, and finished packing up all of our stuff. We played some ping pong and some other games just to pass the time ’til our flight left. When Bob got off work, we had a small dinner at Ruby Tuesday’s near the airport before he dropped us off. We all said our goodbyes and got ready to get back to real life.
Hawaii was an amazing place with amazing people. As far as starting off the year, Hawaii was the place to be, and I had one hell of an adventure!
